first altered book/journal 2005

Summer 2005 gluebook.

This journal was started in the summer of 2005. It was a "gluebook" of sorts. I used it to cut out inspiring images and little decorative vignettes I liked. I had not yet had an art space, or the art supplies here, but it was something that I envisioned for myself in the future. I think this is a good example of how a visual journal doesn't need to have words. It can simply be images of what you want to see in your future or a catalog of images that appeal to you that tell you something about yourself that you do not even know yet! What I would do is flip through magazines and pick images quickly. I didn't think about it too much. Tomorrow I will show you my first "art" journal in which I got out the paints and added words.

Inside the art journal~

Dear Fellow Journal Artist:

This week, I plan to take you "inside" some of my journals. This is my big black sketchbook journal. I really felt like getting it out again this week. I use this one when I want a big surface to paint on. That is what I love about an art journal, it is so versatile. You can pick any type of book you want, there is no right or wrong book, just what feels comfortable to you. You can use it to journal in, paint in, or both. You can collage in it, you can let things "out". You can experiment. It's a place that no one has to see, or you can share your pages and inspire others.
I've been cleaning my studio for the last week, or so, with the emphasis on "or so". I found a box of journals I had forgotten about. So, I've decided that for the next week I will post a page a day from these journals. Some of them are more personal. It won't be anything I've shared here before, or on my flickr. So, come along with me this week and see all the things that an art journal can be to one person.

This book has made me so excited about the journaling journey. It's so powerful to see so many journal pages compiled together in one book. I want to get out my big journal book again!! Every time I open it (even after slowly absorbing page after page), I see something new! So many artist's work to explore! The book flows beautifully. I highly, highly recommend this book for those who want to start art journaling or those who want to go to the next "level". This book has most definitely reminded me what art journaling is truly about: personal expression, honest reflection, and the search for meaning, understanding and love in one's life.

"what's a gluebook?"

"What's a gluebook?"

I decided to answer this question on the journaljunk blog after receiving several inquiries via email. I answered directly to those who asked, so they could "get gluing!", but I wanted to share the answer here for those who were too shy to ask!

!. A gluebook is simply a notebook/journal of any sort that you glue magazine and junk mail clippings in. Many people call them their "inspiration" book. I've kept a gluebook with my favorite decorating ideas/etc. for many years. It is a very relaxing activity, and also a good way to record your favorite ideas, visually. I must say that a "gluebook" is also an excellent thing to have on hand for those of us who have a hard time throwing away movie tickets, special notes from the kids, etc.

Lisa Vollrath also has a Yahoo group (membership must be approved) with prompts, challenges, etc. It's called Gluebooks: the official home of the "gluemonkeys".

I think that is all for now. Oh, and if you want to know what book I use, it's usually a black composition book (you know, the one's the kids buy for school), but sometimes I glue in my old dayplanners.

One more thing. You can also use a gluebook to glue in some visual's that will motivate you to reach your goals. I started doing this several years ago when I read the book, Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach. So, it's kind of like an inspiration board, just one page at a time...
